Church urges prayer for Fiji

THE Anglican Church in New Zealand and Polynesia, including Fiji, has shown its appreciation to government for giving a set timeline on the country's efforts to hold elections.

During their second day of deliberations in Nadi on Sunday, representatives of the Anglican Church of New Zealand and Pacific nations of Fiji, Tonga, Samoa, Niue and the Cook Islands invited believers to pray for the country as it returns to democracy.

The church also recognised the efforts of the late Bishop Sir Paul Reeves for his continuous efforts in maintaining communication between Fiji and the Commonwealth.

"We appreciate the efforts of the late Sir Paul Reeves on behalf of the Commonwealth to try to keep open the lines of communication with the present Fijian administration," said Archbishop Brown Turei.

"Bishop Sir Paul Reeves' mission was the encouragement of a return to a duly elected parliament by the holding of free elections. A timeline for this process has now been offered."

Archbishop Turei said they would continue to invite prayers for this crucial journey as the people of Fiji discovered, determined and discerned for themselves the form of governance that best suited their needs.
