Asian nationals not charged yet

Police have yet to lay charges on the six Asian nationals facing allegations of human trafficking and prostitution.

Police spokesperson Inspector Atunaisa Sokomuri said the six Asians were referred to the Police Human Trafficking Unit by the Immigration Department last Friday.

He said investigations continued and charges have not been laid yet.

The six were under investigations by the Immigration Department from last Thursday on allegations of human trafficking.

Immigration director Major Nemani Vuniwaqa said the suspects had been moved around by an alleged local contact since their arrival.

“On arrival they stayed in a hotel, and then they were moved to a residential place before being moved again to a hotel where they were arrested.

“We are questioning them. They are revealing the names of some people who are working with them.

“These people brought them here and they promised them work in Fiji, but instead, when they arrived here they had been involved in activities like sex in exchange for money,” he said.

Fiji Sun understands that five suspects are from Thailand and the sixth suspect is holding a Fiji passport.

Major Vuniwaqa said Police interrogations are continuing and more people are expected to be taken in for questioning.
